i had always envied people with luxurious, branded cars. especially those who are young but are capable of driving a 2010 Honda are Mercedes. Not to say that i'm not thankful with what i have-second hand Malaysia-produced car but it just seems unfair to how some people get so much more than what others have. However, something that happened last year struck my conscience.
I was is JB, coming back from work at around 5.00pm when i witnessd an accident in front of my eyes. 2 guys, riding a motorbike, crashed into a cement divider and spun into the middle of the road. clearly in pain, the 2 guys got up and tried to hurdle their half-broken bike onto the sidewalk. i pulled my car over to check them out. not surprising, both of them were covered with blood and were wincing in pain. when i got closer, i noticed they were foreigners from a neigbouring country. i took the initiative, ask them their names and got them to call their friends. at the same time, another guy on a bike pulled over to see if there was anything he could do. we discussed and i decided to take the 2 of them to the hospital while the other guy would wait for their friends to pick up the motorbike. at the moment of happening, not the slightest of hesitation crossed my mind, even though i knew that my car would be full of blood, i didnt think twice about it. Lucky for them, Hospital Ampuan Rahimah was just around the corner.
My point is not to boast on my 'wonderfulness' or sense of social conscience. What struck me was the fact that a lot of cars passed us without even making an effort to slow down of stop to check on the unfortunate guys. most of the cars were new, luxurious, branded looking cars. looking at the pool of blood in my car, it struck me that these guys didn't want to take a chance to 'dirty' their car. i wont blame them. if it was me, i would have been reluctant to do it in my new Mercedes or Ferrari. of coz, in a logical state of mind, who would want to taint their expensive car with dirt, wut more blood.even if a person is to do so, there would be second thoughts...
after the incident, i self rationalize that every thing has its purpose- in this situation, my old but faithful automobile. quoted from an inspirational article online:
"God would not ask what car you drive-but who you helpd along the way."
